On the 10th of November 2014, some friends and I went to the Jean Paul Gaultier
exhibition held in the National Gallery of Victoria.
The exhibition is titled
"Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk"
I feel that it's only natural for fashion students to go to these events.
Apparently, NGV is the only Australian venue for the exhibition, so it's quite lucky
that we live here, yeah?
The exhibition goes on from 16 October 2014 - 8 February 2015.
It shows all the expressive, somewhat dark and eccentric creations of the renowned French designer.
Tickets can be bought online at the NGV website or on the door.
Shall we take a look at what's inside?

Anyway, here's Monsieur Jean Paul Gaultier (or just a mannequin of him)
Let's start the tour!
The first room that I went in was full of blue walls and stages with mannequins on them.
These particular mannequins surprise me because they had with faces and voices projected on them.
Some of them sings and also talk (not to mention their eyes googling around, kinda creepy but it's definitely interesting)
I reckon these are some of his first garments, which appears to be stage costumes.
Each one was made with great details and interpretations of the characters.
Stunning!
The second room's walls were all graffiti and there is a long catwalk with mannequins going around it.
Just one look and you could tell that they're all punk inspired.
Those are some crazy hair-dos, don't you think?
Before I show you guys the next set of pieces, I'm sure you are all familiar with the 'cone brassiere' which Madonna is famous for.
Well, I got to see the originals up close and the details are just amazing!
You can really tell Jean Paul Gaultier's fascination in women's corsets in these garments.
The following room was dark and filled with red lights.
Honestly, the pieces in this room kinda creeps me out, because I think they're garments which represent the human body (with all the veins and such).
The lighting made my pictures look horrible and I really couldn't take any good ones.
The scariest part of this experience was listening to this guy's voice recording (he was talking with his reflection in this screen or 'mirror' I supposed).
He was talking, literally had a conversation with his reflection and let me tell you that you do not want to know what they (or he) were talking about.
I can't really remember, but all I know is that they both creep me out!
Jean Paul Gaultier made a lot of garments for films, commercials, and television programs back in the day.

I personally like to draw and love fashion illustrations.
How cool are they?
On to the next room, this one had loads of mannequins with different types of garments (which is kind of confusing).
I reckon, this room is also for costumes or runway pieces.
Here's my favorite piece of the whole exhibition.
It's an Indian-inspired wedding dress (or gown).
In addition, a very unique and interesting garment...
The last room was filled with Jean's later pieces, a set of modern and simplified garments in
comparison to his previous ones, but still has his distinct aesthetic.

To sum up, my experience was a really memorable one.
Seeing each one of the garments that he made in great details and design blow me away.
Being a designer (or any profession) is not easy, there will be a series of difficulties.
I'm 100% sure that the first time wasn't easy for Jean as well.
But, I believe that each of person can get through them if they just push themselves through struggles, taking it one step at a time, slowly but sure.
That what makes famous people famous, their efforts put into making extraordinary things.
Monsieur Gaultier definitely inspires me to work harder.
Maybe someday I too can be as famous and inspiring as he is.
I'm glad that I'm able to share experiences and opinions with other people.
