Batik All-day Everyday

Welcome to another post here in CHEKBOKS!
I have a very exciting and wonderful content to share with you all.
As Indonesians, batik is an essential to have in our wardrobes.
Whether as casual or formalwear, batik is a definite must-have.

Batik is one of Indonesia's proud piece of art that all of society need to embrace.
However in these modern days, batik is not given as much appreciation it deserves.
To most people, batik appears as a traditional thing, as to why it is not very appealing to the younger audience.

On a better note, there are numerous pieces of modern batik being developed by Indonesian designers and this brings joy to my heart.
Today I want to share with you how I style some pieces that I currently own.
These does not dictate on how to style particular pieces, but to give examples and/or ideas on how to put together outfits that has both batik and to give off a modern feel.

I hope you enjoy and see you at the end of the post!

-

The first piece is this batik print square cardigan.
Why is this square?
Because the construction of this cardigan and the rectangular shape.

The way I styled this is quite casual.
I wore a black cropped shirt, dark greeen pants, threw in a light gold necklace and black strappy heels to complete the whole outfit.

Cardigan : Caroline Kosasih

-

Second, I have this gorgeous super-high-waisted batik wide pants.
I'm head over heels for these pants and is one of the statement pieces I have in my wardrobe.
The fabric is a uniquely woven batik print and the colors are just stunning.
The cut is higher compared to a usual high-waisted pair of pants.
Nonetheless, it is very comfortable to wear.

It's definitely a formal type of outfit.
Rock up to a party or an important event and blind everyone with this colorful ensemble.
The key to styling these types of garments with loads of colors is to pick one color and wear a top/bottom in a similar shade.
Also, try to have minimal accessories or maybe a bag with a muted plain color.
Originally, I wanted to pair this with a mustard color top but I couldn't find any.

Pants : Esayuri

-

The third and last piece is this super-wide pants.
The batik print on these ones are somewhere in between traditional and modern.
It is so comfortable and very versatile.

It has a high side-split to compliment the wide hem design.
A creatively-made pair of pants and I totally love it.
I can wear this outfit to any formal event but, it's not too formal so it's still casual.
Effortless!

Ta-dah~
Favorite shot of the whole shoot! (and the only one where my arms aren't as thick... /cries)
I wore a sleeveless top with a side bow design and a gold necklace.

Pants : Ethereal

-

This concludes today's post, I hope you all enjoyed and are inspired!
As always, I appreciate your love and support for this blog so thank you!

I would also like to encourage you to appreciate more of what batik has to offer.
It is ours to keep and with a little twist, all of us can enjoy it more.
It's beautiful, it's versatile, it's Indonesia!

See you on the next one~

Sometimes you need a good amount of thinking to get you going, especially in bad times.
And indulging yourself in reading is one good way to escape from life once in a while.
Let your imagination fly and mind cleared, then you can once again overcome obstacles.

A little ensemble for a day out for brunch and a good book.
This 3/4 wide denim pants are my current favorite!
I'm also hunting for another pair of culottes too haha
Tell me if you guys find good ones around!

Cool and chic were never this easy~

Roots

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Hello beautiful people!
How y'all doing?
I'm so sorry I haven't updated the blog because I was busy with uni and dance stuff.
Now that I finally have free time, I'll use it wisely to relax and think back to my roots.
My background, how I grow up, my degree in fashion, why I started doing this very blog, what I have become into today.

Meet my 2013 self! (with my mini-me)
I've grown up in an ordinary Chinese family with 2 brothers and a sister, believe it or not i used to be a tomboy.
I don't like shopping or dressing up and I don't have a care in the world.
I like sports and love to laugh hysterically in school.
But everything slowly changed when I was in middle school.
Started to love dancing, caring about my appearance and became a hardcore K-pop fan until today.

Dancing has been a really big part of my whole life, I used to 'not like' ballet from young cause I'm not that graceful and I don't have balance like the other girls, but I do love moving and gliding across the floor with music.
However in middle school, I had a best friend who introduced me to an amazing genre in dance which I never knew before, hiphop.
I know it's a huge turn changing from one genre to another cause both seem to be in each end of the spectrum, but nonetheless, I was hooked.

So, you can say that I didn't learn the basics properly but I was definitely on fire for it.
I strive to learn as much as I can from her and show to people what I got.
The result being I joined the dance team for an annual basketball competition between schools for 2 years in a row from 2009 to 2010.
2010 was definitely a year to remember, both our school's boys basketball team and the dance team got into the finals!
We didn't win but the experience I faced with the whole family of players and dancers was unforgettable! #GOTEAM
Following up after middle school, I got in to the dance team for the same competition for high school level and man, it was literally the best year for as long as I was dancing.

(please ignore the McDonalds cup hahahaha)
My family of 13 members including our teacher/big brother/mom(?) were inseparable.
Sure we had drama here and there every now and then, but that what makes the family ONE.
Dancing builds character and provoke passion more than anything I knew.
This pair of basketball jersey really means a lot to me, they taught me so many life lessons and to keep my core, my original intentions in life.

Moving on...

Middle to high school life changes the way I look at myself and made me care more about appearance.
To make a start was difficult for me.
The habits I had was basically impossible to change.
But slowly, it kinda grows on me.
Not long after, I was experimenting with all sorts of beauty products, exploring clothes and even learning one or two things about hair.
All sorts of things happen (let's just say trials and so many errors), I like to think they're all part of the fun.
I learned to know myself more from the outside and why do I have to take care of it.
Not that appearance is everything, but I think presenting yourself nicely is very important.
To you and to others as well.

Long story short, I didn't finish high school because I had to go study abroad.
I thought I was gonna leave my whole life behind in Indonesia, the comfort of my home, family, and friends; and just be miserable and friendless in Melbourne.
I wasn't scared or anything, I was just worried cause I suck at making new friends.
I thought I was just gonna be that one awkward Asian girl who sits and eats alone and people are gonna judge (me basically being paranoid -_-)
I wasn't forced to go, but I feel going abroad was the path I had to take.
And it's indeed the right one.

I started my uni life with a foundation course in RMIT taking its design stream.
My life was introduced to many different sides of arts that I never knew before.
I learned so much, about arts, history, people, emotions, and more.
I made tons of multi-cultural friends (because they started talking to me first yay! *tears of joy*).
I got a scholarship.
I also made a lot of new Indonesian friends, both in uni and in church.
It's stressful sometimes, but it was all for good reasons.
And when it seems that it couldn't get any better, I became best friends with someone who is a complete opposite of the introverted me.
She sparks the spirit inside of me to pursue art and especially fashion even further.
She gives great advice and she's really funny hahaha
I couldn't even imagine what if I didn't met her then.

Our friendship is the thing that got me started on all of this!
and these aren't even near a quarter of the number of shoots we did together.

I've always wanted to do ootd or outfit photoshoots ever since I started liking fashion and styling.
This keeps my passion alive.
I know that some of you may think that matching clothes together and taking pics are normal or even weird.
It actually means a lot.
Every single style put together using different elements, what worked and what doesn't, solving problems, combining fashion and photography, angling, composition, etc.
It excites me so much.
There's no end, it goes on forever, endless possibilities, and creativity at its best!
You can create anything and inspire people through the clothes you wear and the photographs you take.
It's that simple yet it's so amazing.

Passion drives me to do my best in everything, especially in my degree.
I want to develop my creativity and push the boundaries of what is design in my head, but still root to my core.
Every person had their own take on what is fashion and how they look at it.
That what makes fashion so diverse.
To differentiate myself from them is indeed challenging.

I recently experience failure and thank God that it happened to me.
Because failing's a part of learning.
I learned that I need to push myself even harder in every work that I do in every single subject.
I also learned to work out my priorities and managing time.
Each subject are different yet the same, they're all related and there's tons of things to be considered.
Just thinking about it drives me nuts sometimes.
Learning how to design clothes in many different ways, figuring out every line and curve of the design, consider fabrications, make them in a certain way to evoke certain emotions, the craftsmanship, effort and time put into every garment.
It seems insane, but it's what I love to do.
The dress above is my final work after 1 year of learning in university, I know it's not perfect but I put my whole effort into it.
I say that I'm a very proud fashion designer to make this from scratch.

"What if I fall? Oh but my darling, what if you fly?" - Erin Hanson
Nobody's perfect and not all of us can perfectly realize the potential deep inside.
Up until now I still can't determine what is it that I want to accomplish out of the many things I learned.
My mind changes every single time I think of different things, second-guessing, and sometimes just clueless.
I'm praying and waiting everyday for Him to show me the light.
That missing piece to my answer my questions.

I think I've written enough of the things I want to share.
I hope through this special post, I can relay the passion and sincerity to you guys.
If you have dreams, by all means chase it.
Reach it with your full on effort.
I believe if you push yourselves hard enough, it'll happen all by itself.

Thanks for reading until the end.
Hope it helps in anyway possible.
Thank you.

Before the After

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Heyya!
How y'all doing?
Well, the holiday is nearing its end and soon we'll go back to either school or uni classes, right?
I know it can be depressing at times, but let's look at it on the bright side.
That way, we'll face each day with joy and a thankful heart.

So, for today's post I'm going to share something of my passion which is fashion, specifically in styling.
My interest in styling grew since I started to like shopping.
K-pop was also a huge influence to me (not surprisingly haha).
I wasn't really a 'girl' in middle school and I disliked shopping more than anything, I was really into online games and stuff like that.
But, ever since I cared about how I looked, I started to change too!
And voila! I've become the self I am today.

To start off, in my Instagram post I promised to talk about my recent fashion obsession.
Nowadays, (i don't know why) I start to shop for monochrome colors, or plain clothing with a certain type of silhouette.
I have always loved boxy, loose/oversized kinda clothes.
For the photoshoot, I also wore similar shapes.

Whether it's black or white or grey, I kept on looking for the same stuff.
Is it maybe because I changed my hair color?

I think most of you know, my hair was always brown (either light or dark).
Well, the thing is I got tired of coloring my hair so much that I returned it back to black.
And apparently, black hair is now started to trend (and I had no idea at all).

Back then, I didn't have a particular style.
I just picked up whatever I like.
I slowly started to study styles of all sorts of people, whether it's the people around me or in social medias.
For me, It's always a good idea to broaden your knowledge and to know many different styles.

Personally, my style pretty much depends on my mood.
Not too long ago, I was totally into bright, colorful clothes with cute pop art patterns.
After that, I liked 1960s boxy crop tops, baggy sweaters, beanies, plain loose clothing.
Now, I'm beginning to like 1900s silhouettes when they had big bows and ribbons on their clothing, especially around the neck.
A very vintage take influenced by my favorite K-girlband, A Pink!
If you're curious, you can check out their performance videos on Youtube.
The song is titled 'LUV'

I'm also obsessed with photoshoots (pardon my narcissism).
In this one, I tried to portray a dreamy innocent look.
Quick tip: you can just stare blankly into the camera or look elsewhere but try to give a gentle expression.

By the way, flower crowns are so in trend right now and can't stop obsessing over it too.

This shoot was taken in the infamous Jalan Gula here in Surabaya by my very talented friend, Budianto Siswoyo.

Tea time after the shoot at Cup and Crumbs Surabaya.
Enjoyed freshly brewed sweet-scented green tea.

Usually I would write where did I got my outfit from, but now I wouldn't.
Style is not about the brands, it's about attitude and the way you portray it to the public.
But, if maybe you really wanna know where I got them from, feel free to comment below or send me an e-mail anytime!

Had a blasting good time shooting and catching up with an old friend over tea.
P.S. a very nice quote up above!

I hope I didn't bore you guys to death haha.
I tend to skip and talk about something else, then go back to the first thing I was talking about.
Sorry if I confused you, but I'm just excited!
It's really fun talking about the things that you're passionate about :)

A quick message for you style hunters out there:
DON'T BE SCARED!
Just grab anything that you like, then take a very good look at how you fit in them.
Experiment is the key!
I personally don't really care what people say about my style, so maybe that's a good tip too.
Just ignore everyone and be as crazy and creative as you want~

BE BRAVE and most importantly, BE YOU!
